Tell us about yourself. Tell us a little about your work.
My name, Ma’at, is pronounced “ma ought” like, “Ma ought not do that”—but I do whatever I want. And I want to play Dungeons & Dragons, draw, write, problem solve, and tell all kinds of stories-adventures, ghost stories, comics, etc. My first comic was a short story written for Womanthology and my most recent stories have been writing and illustrating Dungeons & Dragons modules for Adventurers League (the Bleeding Gate trilogy available on the DMs Guild and that I’ll DM at Cave Con).
Tell us about your experience with comic books. What is the first comic book you remember reading? What is your favorite single comic book story?
My very first comic book was The New Mutants #16 with Sal Buscema’s pencils and Chris Claremont’s writing. I was hooked by those teens, full of problems I could somehow identify with. My grocery store never did get anymore issues of New Mutants but I read and reread my copy until the paper was worn out and the images were burned into my brain.
What was the first convention you ever attended? What are your most vivid memories about that show?
My husband, Tyler, took me to San Diego Comic Con in the mid 90s; before then I didn’t even know such a thing existed and I had know idea how to manage my hopping-for-joy excitement and crowd-induced anxiety (The secret is pacing, consistently eating good food, and taking sensory breaks like, for me, finding quiet hidden places and/or wearing noise cancelling headphones).
What comics, books, TV, and movies are you enjoying right now?
I’m enjoying reading and referencing all the Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition books, every one! And occasionally the older versions for inspiration and curiosity. For other inspiration I enjoy SciFi and fantasy, particularly books that show the internal strength, resiliency, and kindness of characters.
What are you looking to most when it comes to Cave Con’s inaugural event?
At Cave Con the moment I look forward to the most is sharing storytelling with those who come play Dungeons & Dragons with me Saturday and Sunday. I’m excited to show you the town, people, and problems I’ve created, and then see the heroes you make and how they save the day!
