Similarly, Orwell’s representation of the social
and political oppression in the World state exhibits the relation between the
misuse of technology and society’s authoritarian control over individuals. Orwell
demonstrates this through the juxtaposition of “end hunger, disease… raise
living standards” to the miserable life of Winston in “the cold winds… swirled
dust and paper into spirals” that evokes a pitiful misconception that imposes
the deliberate neglect of society’s citizens as technology is used as a source
of control and exploitation. The composer’s addresses his context of post war
Europe, as the expansion of military technology was abused to kill masses of
people and the concern of consistent surveillance was existent. Furthermore,
helicopters that “skimmed like blue bottles…snooping” is personified to suggest
the dispossession of privacy and freedom due to technological advancements.

This parallels the fear in the 1940’s Europe as communist R8ussia and Stalin’s purging of human
resistance to his political view raises concerns on top of a world that was
already in fear of the horrors of Nazism. The composer furthers the idea of
individualism constraint through the symbolic use of “speak writes”, a system
which dictates human thoughts and alters history, highlighting the fear of
media manipulation and language control throughout post-war Europe. The
presence of the telescreens also links Orwell’s concerns about nationalism brutality
as it contributes to the fear of technology’s oppression on human choices and
opinions. The operation of these technologies is used as a metaphoric reference
that showcases to the audience the struggles in society through the forewarnings
of totalitarian governments.
