breathtaking masterpiece made 1501-1504 is still until this day a famous
masterpiece ever created. David was not only the most well-known sculpture but
in most visited galleries in the world, Galleria dell’ Accademia. Michelangelo
mastered David, a full-size nude statue. This nude statue stands at 17 feet
tall, prepped with a slingshot in one hand and stone in the other. Weighing at
12,478.12 pounds of straight gleaming white marble. This marble from the
quarries in Carrara, a single block of the whitest of the world. High quality
that was revered during the Greek and Roman eras, David shows off an extremely
buff body. A stance where Michelangelo illustrates the natural of the body
through the bending of the hips in one direction and the legs in another
direction. David has a meaning and a story behind it.  He symbolizes a strong, courageous, and
youthful, what the city in Florence, Italy strived to be. “the nudity of the
figure and the contrapposto stance are directly indebted to the Medici
celebration of all things ancient Greek.” (pg.34, book) 

David is one of the representations of the Renaissance ideal of human
potential. He made such an impact on the society; he was the first
free-standing colossal nude sculpture since the classical time. David held the
importance for Florence as the symbol of the strength in defense against
neighboring enemies. As a young boy at the time, he chose to fight the
philistine giant, Goliath.  “Goliath with
his armor and shield, David armed with his rock, his sling, his faith in god
and his courage.” ( David slings a stone with all his might and
hits him in the center of his forehead. Goliath falls to the ground and his head
was chopped by his own knife. David then get recognized as the hero of Florence
and portrayed after his victory.

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, who created the famous
masterpiece. An Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, architect, and poet
influence on the development of western art. He created this piece as a project
he was hired for. Michelangelo was twenty-six years old when he took on the
task and worked on it for more than two years. To create David, he worked on a
block that was already used by two other artists. The block was lied “abandoned
for twenty-five years in a courtyard of the Opera del Duomo.”(”)When
the statue was ready, it was placed next to the entrance to Palazzo Vecchino.
It took four days to move the statue. Then it was relocated to protect it from
damages, and replaced in where its admired today, Accademia Gallery.
