Artificial intelligence is intelligence displayed by machines, in contrast with the natural intelligence displayed by humans and other animals. Over the past few decades, the term artificial intelligence has come up in movies, books, news etc. In movies and books, AI usually gains more intelligence than the human race and tries to drive it into extinction. This has resulted it to be feared among some of the population. In terms of the ethics of artificial intelligence the two sides that will be mentioned in this reflection is the positive ways artificial intelligence could affect society and the negatives. The first ethical side of this argument, is the positives to society that artificial intelligence would bring. For example one of the positives could be the fact that machines are programmed for long hours and can constantly perform. And unlike humans, they don’t require refreshments and frequent breaks. The are able to keep working at the same pace and are much more efficient that us at tasks that require long hours as they never get tired. Another advantage of the use of artificial intelligence would be the reduction of errors. With the help of AI the human race could develop significantly due to its ability to perform huge calculations with millions of numbers without error. Artificial intelligence is already getting better than humans at some things. This could lead to advancements in fields like science or mathematics. For example, in the transit of goods in production from one section to another has been replaced by robots completely. The robots move the goods efficiently and at high speeds from one region to the next without unnecessary delays as they can work without fatigue unlike us humans. By doing this there is a greater amount of capital throughout the business as humans would be replaced by robots. But although artificial intelligence has all these positive things, it also has negatives as well that it could bring to society which is the second perspective of this ethical issue. Artificial intelligence is known for the possibility it has to copy and even outsmart human intelligence, this could be bad unless we develop the technology to be able to control the pace that it learns and monitor it well. Another popular concern when the term artificial intelligence comes up is the amount of jobs that will be lost to artificial intelligence, already there is a huge amount of job loss due to machines taking over eg. factories, assembly lines etc, but once artificial intelligence is smart enough to perform tasks that machines alone could not perform the amount of jobs being lost will drastically increase. Lastly there is a popular concern among a part of the population that artificial intelligence would gain more intelligence than humans and eventually we wouldn’t control most of the power in the world.Examples of this would be in workplaces where machines would be able to produce items more efficiently and to a better standard than a normal worker, since AI isn’t that well developed yet by researchers there are not many real life examples of it replacing jobs yet. There are some for example call response services, and how AI reacts to what the caller says. But otherwise AI hasn’t taken over lots of jobs yet, which is why people fear it being developed as there are lots of theories of it taking jobs.  This is quote from Stephen Hawking regarding the topic of artificial intelligence and he said that it could be the”worst event in the history of our civilization” unless we can learn to control its development, he made the comment at the Web Summit technology conference in Lisbon, Portugal. Now regarding the worry artificial intelligence will outsmart humans, there is a company owned by Elon Musk and Sam Altman called OpenAI, this company works on the development of artificial intelligence. During the International 2017 which is a video game tournament of the game Dota 2. OpenAI let a machine learned bot play a 1v1 demonstration game, it played one of the most well known professional players in the world and won, later one of the members of staff explained that this bot had learned  by playing itself over the course of 2 weeks.I believe that AI would hold more benefits to the world than it would have negatives, but I also believe that the only time we should be able to control the pace that artificial intelligence learns at otherwise it could become a catastrophe.”Success in creating effective AI, could be the biggest event in the history of our civilization. Or the worst. We just don’t know. So we cannot know if we will be infinitely helped by AI, or ignored by it and side-lined, or conceivably destroyed by it,” This is another quote from Stephen Hawking regarding artificial intelligence. I personally believe AI is a good thing as long as we can control its development so that we can always stay on top of it.
