Mangifera commonly known as mango or “the King of fruits in tropical fruits” is popular
among all tropical fruits and have great importance so selected in this project
as a fruit on which genome we have worked on.
In the Ayuverdic and indigenous medical systems it counts for an important herb
for nearly over 4000 years. The substances in mango have high therapeutic
potential. According to ayuverda  mango
tree comprises of different medicinal properties, could be used to treat tumor,
rabid dog, piles, toothache, diarrhea, cough, insomnia, hypertension, asthma,
anaemia, haemorrhage, dysentery, heat stroke, blisters, miscarriage, liver
disorders, tetanus ,wounds in the mouth and excessive urination. Phytomedicines
should be sufficiently regulate based on this knowledge.1

The genus Mangifera comprises nearly 70
members mostly located in Thailand, Philippines, Malay peninsula and Indonesia
archipelago. A few thousands year ago mango cultivation begin  in India, several thousand years ago it first
spreads to Africa, Central and South America from  Southeast Asia. India and several countries
in Southeast Asia are the main growing and production center. Mango being a
source of vitamins (vitamin A and vitamin C) and minerals and popular for its
attractive color, texture, and juicy flavor covers the total arear of 942,560
ha from 1978 to 1979, with a total production of 8.215 million tons, which
under fruits production is nearly a 42.6%. The area increases to 2,297,000 ha
in 2010 to 2011 2. In Pakistan at present the production of mango
covers nearly around 170,100 thousand hectares with total manufacturing of 1.8
million tons. only the Punjab province is assembling 70% of the total
production, Sindh assemble 24% and KPK assemble 1%.The worth of fresh mango
export is nearly 17,071 lacs in 2008 to 2009 2. A ripe mango contains 79.2-82%
moisture,10-17.3%total sugars, 12.9-20.8% total soluble solids 7.27-12.35%
non-reducing sugars, 0.49-0.58% ash content.

In Pakisntan among 250 known varieties few
popular and important are Dasheri ,
Aphanso, Chaunsa, Anwar Retual and Sindhri. The Chaunsa cultivar of mango is mainly cultivated in north India, as
“King of Mangoes”. It is popular for its sweet taste and aroma. It helps in
digestion, cures anaemia and aids in pregnancy and cures acne. In Pakistan it
originates from Rahim Yar Khan and Mltan. Dasheri probably the most
succulent variety of mango in Pakistan because of its sweet flavor. The pulp of
mango is fiber less with firm flesh. They are significant in vitamin C and
flesh. Dasheri have enzymes that aids in digestion. The Aphanso cultivar is
rich in vitamin A and vitamin C.  The
seedling trait of Aphanso makes it 
distinguishable from others. The Sindhri variety is the best among all
the varieties grown in Pakistan. Sindhri variety originates mainly from Sindh.
Its flesh is fibre-less and texture is firm with sweet taste and pleasing
aroma. Anwar Ratual cultivar is considerably cultivated in the province of
Punjab in Pakistan. It distinguishes from other varieties because of its rich
flavor and sweetness. It provide a great amount of energy because of its
nutritional factors. The flesh of Anwar Retual is fiberless and is small. Apart
from these some other known cultivars of mango in Pakistan are Saroli, Samar Bahish, Totapuri , Fajri , and
Neelam3. The main field of cultivation in Pakistan are District
Rahim Yar Khan, Sadiqabad, Bagho Bahar, Jamaldin Wali, Shaikh Wahan, Hyderabad,
Tando Allahyar, Tandojam, digri, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Khairpur Mirus,
Faislabad, Okara, Nawab Shah, MuzzaffarGarh, Sargodha, and kaotAddu.4 The total production of mangoes in Pakistan is 10
lacs ton per year.
