“Who is John Hinckley Jr.?” Los Angeles Times. September 1st, 2016. Web. November 15th, 2017. AbstractThirty-six years ago, a maniacal man named John Hinckley Jr. attempted to assassinate former president Ronald Reagan. As time has progressed, John Hinckley Jr. has been spending his days at a psychiatric hospital in Washington. When Hinckley attempted to assassinate Reagan, he was trying to impress the actress Jodie Foster. According to the author, Hinckley was a “profoundly troubled 25-year-old man” and was ruled not guilty because the members of the jury believed he was insane. Having shown no symptoms of major depression for over two decades, it had been determined to release him to his mother’s house in Virginia. Hinckley is no longer seen as a threat towards Jodie Foster or Ronald Reagan, according to Hinckley’s lawyer, Barry Levine. Hinckley’s release is “a milestone” and would not have been possible if not for his family’s “responsibility to deal with disease,” said Friedman, Hinckley’s lawyer. After 35 years Hinckley was able to return back to his normal life and hopes to dissociate himself from his atrocious past. keywords:assassination attemptJohn Hinckley Jr.Ronald ReaganMarch 30th, 1981 president Ronald Reagan was shot in the chest. He was then pushed into the Presidential limousine by a Secret Service agent then rushed to the George Washington University Hospital instantly. The shot had pierced his left lung and caused it to collapse. Reagan went through two hours of surgery and Dr. Dennis S. O’Leary stated that he was in “good” and “stable” condition and was to be hospitalized for two weeks. However Reagan’s secretary, James Brady, was far more injured. He was shot right above his left eye, the injury was so intense the doctors said he would probably suffer severe brain damage if he even lived at all. Dr. O’Leary said that the secretary’s condition is “critical” and that “the injury caused lots of damage.” Two other men were injured, a Secret Service agent named Timothy J. McCarthy who was shot in the right side and a policemen named Thomas K. Delahaney who was shot in the neck. Every victim survived and the shooter was sent to a psychiatric hospital to recover from his mental illness.Shortly into Ronald Reagan’s presidency he and his secretary, James Brady, were shot. They were both injured; however neither of them actually died. Brady suffered a gunshot to the head while Reagan was shot in the chest. Brady was left partially paralyzed; however, he died in 2014, 33 years after the incident, because of injuries he acquired from getting shot. The shooter was identified as John Hinckley Jr. who was trying to impress Jodie Foster, who he had been stalking. Prior to the shooting, Hinckley wrote a letter to Foster saying “the reason I’m going ahead with this attempt now is because I cannot wait any longer to impress you.” He also stated that he wanted to gain her “love and respect.” The jury decided that Hinckley was not guilty because he was insane. He was then admitted into a psychiatric hospital and he stayed there till 2016 when he was released to his mother’s home in Virginia.
